faith from the suburbs of Chicago to the
halls of the Vatican Prie's journey is

now one of the most influential
cardinals of our time yet living with
the heart of a
missionary born on September 14th 1955
in Chicago Illinois Robert Francis
Prevost's early life was shaped by a
blend of rich cultural heritage and
strong familial roots his mother Mildred
Agnes Prevost was a Chicago native with
deep ties to Louisiana Creole heritage
she hailed from a family that had
migrated from New Orleans and after
earning a degree in library science from
Depal University she dedicated herself
to her family and community his father
Lewis Marius Prevost also from Chicago
had a distinguished career a United
States Navy veteran of World War II he
commanded an infantry landing craft
during the Normandy landings and
participated in the critical operation
Dragoon in southern
France after the war he became the
superintendent of Brookwood School
District 167 in Glenwood Illinois
demonstrating his commitment to both
service and leadership robert known
affectionately as Bob or Rob to family
and friends was the youngest of three
children he had two older brothers
Louisie Martin and John Joseph his
paternal heritage was rooted in Italian
and French ancestry with his grandfather
Giovani Roberto Prevostto having
immigrated from Setimo Rotaro near Turin
Italy and his grandmother Suzanne
Fontaine from La Hav France on his
mother's side Robert's grandparents were
Joseph Martinez a mixed race Haitian
born in Hispanola and Louise Bakier a
black Creole from New Orleans this
diverse background provided Robert with

role in his spiritual journey growing up
in Dalton Illinois a suburb on the far
south side of Chicago Robert was shaped
by his experiences at the St mary of the
Assumption Parish in nearby
Riverdale it was here at a young age

connection to the Catholic faith he sang
in the church choir served as an alter
boy and most importantly began to feel a
strong calling to the priesthood he and
his brothers would often play act the
mass at home a gesture that symbolized
his early devotion and desire to serve
God from this early age it was clear
that Robert was on a path that would
lead him to a life of spiritual service
robert's formal education began at St
augustine Seminary High School located
near Satuck Michigan from 1969 to
1973 he attended this minor seminary
where his academic excellence began to
shine his dedication to his studies
earned him a letter of commendation and
he consistently appeared on the honor
role robert's leadership abilities also
emerged early he served as the yearbook
editor-inchief was secretary of the
student council and became a member of
the National Honor Society outside of
academics he engaged in speech and
debate demonstrating a well-rounded
commitment to both intellectual and
extracurricular
activities robert's academic journey
continued at Villanova University an
Augustinian college located near
Philadelphia where he earned a bachelor
of science degree in mathematics in
1977 his thirst for knowledge did not
end with his undergraduate studies he
pursued a master of divinity degree from
the Catholic Theological Union in
Chicago graduating in
1982 during this time Robert also shared
his passion for education by teaching
physics and math at St rita of Casia
High School in Chicago imparting his
knowledge to the next generation in 1984
Robert took his academic pursuits even
further by earning a lentiate of canon
law JCL from the Pontipical University
of St thomas Aquinas in Rome his
intellectual curiosity and dedication to
the church's legal and canonical
framework culminated in a doctor of
canon law JCD degree in
1987 his doctoral thesis focused on the
role of the local prior in the order of
St augustine demonstrating his
commitment to understanding and
improving the structures within the
church throughout his academic and
professional career Robert's faith
remained at the core of his identity his
studies his teaching and his work within
the church were always motivated by his
deep devotion to God and his desire to
serve others in recognition of his
significant contributions to education
and theology Villanova University
awarded him an honorary doctor of
humanities degree in
2014 further solidifying his status as a
respected figure in both academic and
religious circles on September 1st
1977 Robert Francis Pvost made a
significant decision that would shape
the course of his life he joined the
Order of St augustine as a novice this
marked the beginning of a journey that
would take him from the streets of
Chicago to remote corners of Peru where
he would serve as both a spiritual
leader and an advocate for
justice for one year Pvost resided at
Immaculate Conception Church in the
Compton Heights neighborhood of St louis
Lewis Missouri it was here that he
deepened his understanding of religious
life preparing for the vows that would
soon define his commitment to the church
after completing his novice year he
moved to Chicago where on September 2nd
1978 he took his first vows and later on
August 29th 1981 he made his solemn vows
fully committing to the Augustinian
order prevvis's path led him to Rome
where on June 19th 1982 he was ordained
a priest at the church of Santa Monica
Degli Augustini by Archbishop Jean Jado
this ordination was a momentous occasion
not just in his life but for the wider
Augustinian community as it marked the
beginning of a priesthood dedicated to
service and justice
missionary work in Peru a calling to
serve the
marginalized in
1985 Pvost answered a call to serve in
Peru joining the Augustinian mission in
the country for a year he served as the
chancellor of the territorial preleature
of Chulakanas a position that required
him to navigate the complexities of the
church's mission in a politically
unstable and economically challenged
region after defending his doctoral
thesis in
1987 Prevost returned to the United
States for a brief period where he took
on the roles of vocation director and
missions director for the Augustinian
province of our mother of good council
in Olympia Fields Illinois he also
worked with the faculty of the
Augustinian Noviciate in Okanamaw
Wisconsin however his commitment to
missionary work soon called him back to
Peru in
1988 where he would remain for over a
decade in Trujillo Pvost headed the
Augustinian Seminary where he was not
only a teacher of canon law but also
took on various leadership roles within
the diosis and seminary as prefect of
studies and a judge in the regional
ecclesiastical court he helped shape the
religious education of many future
clergy beyond his academic and
administrative duties Prevost was also
heavily involved in parish ministry
serving the city's marginalized
populations especially those living on
the outskirts of town one of his key
achievements in Peru was his success in
recruiting Peruvians for the priesthood
and leadership positions within the
Augustinian order prevost's efforts to
nurture local vocations were vital to
the sustainability of the order's
presence in the region he also advocated
for Venezuelan refugees fleeing to Peru
despite the widespread discrimination
they faced pvost's time in Peru was
marked not only by his religious and
academic work but also by his deep
involvement in the social and political
issues of the time as the country faced
intense political violence during the
Fujimori era Prevost was an outspoken
critic of President Alberto Fujimori's
government he focused particularly on
the human rights violations committed by
the Peruvian army and paramilitary
groups such as the Kolina group during
the period of terrorism in the 1990s
in 2017 Prevost continued to speak out
on the injustices of the past
criticizing President Pedro Pablo
Kutinsk's decision to pardon Fujimori a
move that many viewed as a betrayal of
the victims of human rights
abuses prevost called on Fujimori to
take personal responsibility for the
harm done and to offer an apology for
the atrocities committed under his
leadership prevost's advocacy for human
rights extended beyond political figures
he also stood firm against the violence
wrought by the shining path a mauist

regions of Peru in his work with the

for James Ray an Augustinian priest who
had been suspended from ministry due to
credible allegations of sexual abuse
this decision would later draw criticism

to a grammar school and in 2002 Rey was
moved following the implementation of
stricter church policies despite the
controversies Pvost's leadership within
the order was widely seen as effective
his appointment as prior general of the
Order of St augustine in 2001 where he
served two consecutive six-year terms
further solidified his reputation as a
capable administrator during this time
Provost played a critical role in
shaping the global Augustinian community

transformation and ensuring that the

country was embroiled in political
violence and social inequality and
Prevost became a vocal critic of
President Alberto Fujimori's government
particularly during the period of
terrorism in the
1990s he also became a defender of the
victims of violence including those who
had suffered at the hands of the Shining
Path guerrilla group post's commitment

as he personally traveled to
hard-to-reach areas often at great
personal risk to offer support and
comfort to those affected by violence
his advocacy for the victims of sexual
abuse by priests both in Peru and beyond

Francis appointed him as apostolic
administrator of the Dascese of Chiclio
and by 2015 Provost was named Bishop of
the Dascese his appointment marked a new
chapter in his ecclesiastical career one
that saw him further solidify his

as the establishment of a diosisen
