BRICS countries, along with other Global South nations, have voiced their discontent with the United Nations for several reasons. Chief among their concerns is the significant influence Western nations wield in key international organizations and decision-making processes. These countries believe that the current UN framework does not adequately represent their interests and viewpoints. Consequently, the BRICS nations are pushing for a more democratic and inclusive structure within the UN.
For instance, during the recent BRICS summit, there were calls for comprehensive reform of the UN to ensure greater involvement of emerging nations, including a re-evaluation of the Security Council's composition and the veto power held by the permanent members.
Consequently, there have been numerous calls for significant reforms or even a total overhaul of the UN, with the goal of establishing a more equitable and representative system of global governance. This video will delve into these proposed changes and the motivations driving them. TRANSCRIPT brics countries along with other Global
South Nations have voiced their discontent with the United Nations for several reasons their key concerns is the significant influence Western Nations wield in key International organizations and decision-making processes these countries believe that the current un framework does not adequately represent their interests and viewpoints consequently the brics nations are pushing for a more democratic and inclusive structure within the UN for instance during the recent bricks Summit there were calls for comprehensive reform of the UN to ensure greater involvement of emerging Nations including a re-evaluation of the security council's composition and the veto power held by the permanent members consequently there have been numerous calls for significant reforms or even a total overhaul of the UN with the goal of establishing a more Equitable and representative system of global governance this video will delve into these proposed changes and the Western bias and double standards brics Nations perceive a bias in the UN and other International bodies favoring Western countries this perception is especially pronounced in matters of Human Rights where brics members like China and Russia often face criticism while similar issues in Western Nations seem to be overlooked for example while Russia faces substantial criticism for its human rights record particularly issues affecting the lgbti community and China is often criticized for its treatment of to betan human rights Defenders similar issues in Western countries often receive less attention on International platforms a notable example involves the treatment of refugees European countries have been commendably welcoming to Ukrainian refugees providing extensive support and resources however this response starkly contrasts with the treatment of refugees from other conflict zones like Syria Afghanistan and Somalia who have faced much harsher conditions and less support from the same European nations the international response to human rights violations in the Israel Palestine conflict often appears biased while many governments quickly condemn the attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians there has been comparatively muted criticism regarding Israel's severe retaliatory measures in Gaza which include cutting off essential supplies and using white phosphorus in densely populated areas actions that have led to significant civilian casualties and are considered war crimes this double standard highlights the inconsistency in international humanitarian responses as documented by Human Rights Watch and International representation and influence bricks Nations contend that existing Global governance Frameworks such as the UN the World Bank and the international monetary fund are heavily influenced by Western Powers failing to adequately represent the interests and voices of emerging economies and developing countries they believe that their economic growth and geopolitical significance are not sufficiently acknowledged in the governance and policies of these institutions the brics block has emphasized that these institutions often reflect a postor War II power structure that does not align with the current global economic realities for instance the IMF and World Bank have traditionally been led by a European and an American respectively reinforcing Western dominance in Global decision-making economic and developmental concerns many Global South Country countries including those in the bricks group feel that Western dominated institutions impose strict conditions on financial aid and development assistance which can restrict their economic growth and sovereignty they argue that these conditions often benefit Western economic and political interests rather than meeting the genuine developmental needs of the recipient Nations for instance these institutions often impose austerity measures and economic policies that prioritize debt repayment and fiscal discipline over social and economic develop vment in the recipient countries this has been a longstanding criticism as these conditions can lead to reduced public spending on essential services like healthcare and education ultimately hindering sustainable development can you do us a favor let's take a quick pause could you do us a favor if you enjoy our content please hit the like button to help the situation Western actions such as sanctions and political pressure are viewed as efforts to limit the influence of brics Nations on the global stage further fueling dissatisfaction with the operations of international institutions including the UN for example China faces several challenges with Western Nations especially regarding its policies in shinjang Hong Kong and the South China Sea the imposition of sanctions and other punitive measures by the United States and European Union has been seen as efforts to curb China's growing economic and geopolitical power these actions have led to increased tensions and a sense of being targeted by the existing International order moreover Western countries geopolitical strategies such as the formation of alliances like the quad comprising the United States India Japan and Australia and Aus comprising Australia the United om and the United States are perceived by brics Nations as further attempts to contain their influence these alliances are seen as efforts to counterbalance China's rise and Russia's assertiveness reinforcing the brics country's sense of being marginalized within the current International System One notable area of contention is the allocation of voting power within the international monetary fund IMF currently voting power is heavily skewed towards Western countries with the United States holding the the largest share brics Nations have long argued that this does not reflect the current global economic realities where emerging economies play a crucial role for instance as of 2020 China's GDP was over $14 trillion making it the second largest economy in the world yet its voting power in the IMF does not proportionately reflect this economic stature many brics countries argue that global climate change policies are often dictated by Western Nations without sufficient consideration for the developmental needs of emerging economies they feel that these policies sometimes impose disproportionate burdens on developing countries which are still working to overcome poverty and industrialize for instance while Western countries push for stringent emission Cuts bricks Nations emphasize the need for financial and technological support to transition to Greener economies without hampering their growth the covid pandemic is another example of poor governance of the international institutions the covid-19 pandemic exposed significant disparities in global Health governance bricks countries have criticized the World Health Organization who and other International bodies for what they see as a biased response that favored wealthy Nations issues such as vaccine hoarding by Rich countries and the slow distribution of vaccines to poorer Nations have highlighted the need for more Equitable Health policies another issue is lack of fair trade bricks Nations believe that current global trade policies are skewed in favor of Western countries they point to issues like agricultural subsidies in the US and Europe which distort Global markets and disadvantage farmers in countries the UN history the United Nations un is an international organization established in 1945 after the devastation of World War II with the primary goal of maintaining International Peace and security promoting human rights and fostering social and economic development formation and early years 1945 to 1949 the UN was founded on October 24th 1945 by 51 countries committed to peace and security through International cooperation and collective security the UN Charter signed at the United Nations conference on international organization in San Francisco provided the foundation for this new international order the idea of the UN emerged from the failure of the League of Nations to prevent World War II and the term United Nations was first used by Franklin D Roosevelt during the war to describe the Allied countries the UN Charter established six principal organs the general assembly the security Council the international court of justice the Secretariat the economic and social Council eoso and the truste ship Council the general assembly serves as a forum for all member states while the security Council with its five permanent Members United States United Kingdom France Russia and China and 10 rotating members is is tasked with maintaining International Peace and security the Cold War era 1950 to 1989 during the Cold War the UN often became a Battleground for ideological conflicts between the Western block led by the United States and the Eastern block led by the Soviet Union despite these tensions the UN played a crucial role in various peacekeeping missions and decolonization efforts significantly expanding its membership as many African and Asian countries gained independence the UN established its first peacekeeping mission in 1948 with the United Nations truth supervision organization unso to monitor the ceasefire in the Middle East in 1948 the general assembly also adopted the universal Declaration of Human Rights setting out fundamental human rights to be universally protected post-cold War period 1990 to 2000 postc Cold War period 1990 to 2000 the end of the Cold War brought new challenges and opportunities for the UN the organization became more active in peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts addressing conflicts in the Balkans Somalia the 1990s saw an increase in the number and complexity of un peacekeeping missions and the Rwandan Genocide and the failure of un peacekeepers to prevent it led to significant introspection and reforms within the organization the UN also took on a greater role in promoting sustainable development and addressing Global environmental issues the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was a landmark event leading to the creation of the UN framework convention on climate change unfccc and the convention on biological diversity CBD the 21st century 2000 present in 2000 the UN adopted the Millennium declaration setting out the Millennium development goals mdgs to be achieved by 2015 focusing on reducing poverty improving health and education and ensuring environmental sustainability building on the mdgs the UN launched the sustainable development goals sdgs in 2015 a set of 17 goals aimed at ending poverty protecting the planet and ensuring prosperity for all 2030 what could replace the United Nations there are several proposals for reforming or replacing the UN one idea is to create a new organization that better reflects the geopolitical realities of the 21st century this could involve expanding the per membership of the security Council to include countries like India Brazil and South Africa which have significant Regional influence and economic power another suggestion is to strengthen Regional organizations such as the African Union the association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union allowing them to play a more prominent role in global governance these Regional bodies could address local issues more effectively while coordinating with a central Global Organization for broader International matters experts have proposed various ideas to enhance Global governance and one notable suggestion is the creation of a new entity called the democratic nations featuring a by Camal legislative system to better represent countries based on population size and influence proposal for democratic nations the idea behind DN is to address the Democratic deficit in current Global governance structures by establishing a bicameral system similar to those found in many national governments this system would include two Chambers one representing governments and another composed of elected representatives directly accountable to the global populace this model aims to bridge the gap between Global institutions and the people they serve enhancing both legitimacy and accountability the concept of a world parliamentary assembly which aligns with the DN proposal has garnered significant Support over the years for instance the European Parliament has repeatedly called for the establishment of a un parliamentary assembly arguing that it would increase the Democratic profile and allow Global Civil Society to have a direct role in decision-making processes the WPA would initially act as an advisory body to the UN General Assembly with the potential to evolve into a more powerful entity with legislative capabilities over time recent surveys indicate broad public support for the creation of a global parliamentary body a poll conducted by the German Friedrich aert Foundation found that an average of 60% of respondents in 15 countries supported the idea of a world Parliament that represents citizens directly based on population size rather than national government representation the proposed structure for the DN or WPA would involve weighted voting to ensure Fair representation this system could take into account factors such as population size and economic contribution to the global economy ensuring that larger and economically significant countries have a proportionate influence while still States challenges and opportunities of DN implementing such a system faces significant challenges including the need for broad consensus among UN member states and potential resistance from powerful countries with veto power in the security Council however the incremental approach suggested for the WPA starting as a consultative body may help build the necessary support and demonstrate its value without immediately threatening existing power final words that's all for this video thank you for watching this video we sincerely appreciate you joining us today if
